The Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transportation (HART) is set to receive a substantial reimbursement of nearly $90 million from the state of Hawaiʻi for the ongoing construction of the city's rail project.

This reimbursement, totaling $89,439,184.09, covers various project expenses, including construction costs, interest on debt service, consultant services, and risk management insurance.

State auditors meticulously reviewed HART's invoices, identifying and removing approximately $43,000 in duplicate labor charges and administrative costs before approving the reimbursement.

This thorough audit process underscores the state's commitment to fiscal responsibility and transparency in managing public funds.

In addition to state reimbursements, HART has secured significant federal funding to advance the rail project.

In April 2024, the Federal Transit Administration released $125 million following the successful amendment of the Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA).

Subsequently, in December 2024, an additional $250 million was allocated after HART awarded the City Center Guideway and Stations contract.

These federal funds are crucial for progressing the project toward its completion.

In August 2024, HART awarded a $1.66 billion contract to Tutor Perini Corporation for the design and construction of the City Center segment, encompassing six stations and approximately three miles of elevated guideway.

This segment is pivotal for connecting key areas of Honolulu and is expected to be completed by 2030.

As of May 2026, construction continues along the Iwilei and Downtown corridors, with station foundation work underway in the Chinatown area.
