Attention North Shore commuters and visitors: Kamehameha Highway at Waimea Bay is scheduled for a full closure on Sunday, May 17, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., to facilitate critical rockfall mitigation efforts. This closure is essential for the safety of all travelers.

The Hawai‘i Department of Transportation (HDOT) will employ helicopters to install rockfall netting over the slope above the roadway. This operation aims to prevent future incidents like the recent rockfalls that have posed significant hazards. During the closure, emergency vehicles and TheBus will be permitted to pass through the area with prior coordination. Motorists are advised to plan alternative routes and expect delays. This initiative is part of a comprehensive $34.4 million slope stabilization project, with completion anticipated later this summer. The project includes anchoring 200,000 square feet of rockfall protection netting and installing a 500-foot-long impact fencing system at the base of the slope. Since early April, a 750-foot-long single-lane closure has been in effect due to previous rockfall incidents. This contraflow system will remain in place throughout the stabilization work, with adjusted timing to accommodate traffic flow. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed about traffic updates and plan their travel accordingly.

HDOT continues to work diligently to ensure the safety and accessibility of this vital transportation corridor. ([hidot.hawaii.gov](https://hidot.hawaii.gov/administration/daylong-closure-of-kamehameha-highway-at-waimea-bay/?utm_source=openai))
